A magnetic lock — or “maglock” — secures a door or gate with a powerful electromagnet instead of a mechanical bolt. They are a staple of commercial access control because they are simple, extremely strong, and fail-safe. Here is what facility managers should know.

How a Maglock Works

A maglock has two parts: an electromagnet mounted to the frame and a steel armature plate on the door or gate. When energized, the magnet bonds to the plate with substantial holding force (commonly 600 to 1,200 pounds). Cut the power and it releases.

Fail-Safe by Design

Because a maglock unlocks when power is removed, it is inherently fail-safe — important for egress and life-safety code. In commercial installations it is tied to the fire alarm and a request-to-exit device so people can always get out.

Where Maglocks Fit

Maglocks are well suited to pedestrian man-gates, office and server-room doors, and controlled entries, paired with access control such as keypads, card or proximity readers, or a video intercom.

Integration Matters

A maglock has to be wired with the access-control and egress devices to code to be both secure and safe. Advanced Fences integrates maglocks and access control with commercial gates and entries. See our access control capabilities.

Commercial Gate Maintenance: When to Service Your Automatic Gate

A commercial automatic gate can cycle thousands of times a month. Like any piece of heavy equipment, it needs scheduled maintenance to stay reliable and safe — and an unplanned gate failure can shut down a loading dock or leave a site unsecured. Here is when, and why, to service a commercial gate system.

Signs Your Gate Needs Service

Slow, jerky, or hesitant movement

Grinding, squealing, or unusual noise

The gate reverses, stalls, or will not fully close

Intermittent or delayed response from the operator or access control

Visible wear on rollers, hinges, chains, or the gate frame

Recommended Service Intervals

High-cycle commercial gates benefit from scheduled preventive maintenance — often quarterly or semi-annually depending on traffic volume. A service visit typically covers lubrication, hardware and fastener inspection, operator diagnostics, and testing of all safety devices.

UL325 Safety Compliance

Commercial gate operators must meet UL325 safety requirements. Routine service includes testing photo-eyes, safety edges, and vehicle loop detection so the gate cannot close on a vehicle or a person — a liability every facility manager should take seriously.

Do Not Wait for a Failure

Preventive maintenance is almost always cheaper than an emergency repair plus the downtime it causes. Advanced Fences installs, services, and repairs commercial gate operators across Texas. See our automation & access control capabilities.

Commercial fencing does far more than mark a property line. For warehouses, industrial sites, utilities, and corporate campuses, an engineered perimeter protects assets, controls who gets in, and signals that a facility is professionally run. Here are the benefits Texas businesses get from a properly built commercial fence.

Security and Access Control

A commercial-grade perimeter is the first layer of physical security. Heavy-duty chain link, ornamental steel, and anti-climb welded mesh resist cutting and climbing, and when they are paired with secure gates and access control they create a controlled, monitored boundary rather than a simple barrier.

Durability and Lower Lifecycle Cost

Commercial systems are built to last: hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated steel, correct post spacing, concrete footings, and proper tension and bracing. That means decades of service in the Texas climate and far fewer repairs than light-duty fencing.

Code Compliance and Insurance

Many commercial sites and insurers require a defined, secure perimeter, and regulated facilities such as substations, water treatment, and energy infrastructure have specific security requirements. A fence installed to commercial code keeps the site compliant.

Professional Appearance

Ornamental steel fencing delivers security with curb appeal, which matters at corporate campuses and front-of-site entrances where the perimeter is part of the first impression.

A Complete Perimeter From One Contractor

The biggest advantage is integration: fence, gates, operators, and access control engineered to work together. Advanced Fences fabricates in-house in Houston and self-performs the full scope. Explore our commercial fencing and commercial gate systems.

Ornamental steel — often called “wrought iron”–style — fencing combines security with a premium, architectural look. That is why it is a popular choice for corporate campuses, institutional properties, and high-visibility commercial entrances. Here is what to consider for a commercial ornamental iron project.

Security With Curb Appeal

Vertical steel pickets are difficult to climb and provide clear sightlines for cameras and patrols, while looking far more refined than chain link — security that also elevates the property.

Materials and Finishes

Modern “wrought iron” fencing is typically welded steel rather than true forged wrought iron. For commercial use it should be hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated for corrosion resistance, with the gauge and height specified for the site.

Matching Gates and Access

Ornamental steel gates — swing or slide — can be matched to the fence and integrated with automation and access control for a cohesive, secure entrance.

Built to Spec, In-House

Advanced Fences fabricates ornamental and architectural iron fencing in-house to your site specifications. See our architectural iron fencing page.
