Friendswood is a small town in Texas. Both Galveston and Harris Counties consider Friendswood to be a part of their communities. In 2019, its population was around 40,300. It is an incorporated residential town.
History
Friendswood was established first as a Quaker community. Quakers are part of the ‘Religious Society of Friends and have roots in Christianity. It is quite likely that Friendswood got its name from the name of the religious society. It was set up by T. Hadley Louis and Frank J. Brown. The Quakers meant for Friendswood to develop as a devout colony. They built gabled houses and churches to practice their religion.
Till the 1950s, Friendswood remained largely a Quaker colony. However, with time more people started to come locate to Friendswood, since the climate and soil provided a good impetus for agriculture. The proximity to Houston also ensured people could work in the city while they lived in the suburban area.
Friendswood was incorporated as a city in 1960. Since then, it has seen massive development. Several schools, libraries, malls, stores, and other amenities have opened up.
Cityscape
The climate here is subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. There is greenery all over the city, owing to its large number of parks, nature reserves, and greenbelts. It is a medium-sized city, covering about 20.9 square miles.
Houses here range from old-style mansions, ranch houses, and modern constructed two-story buildings and apartments. Master-planned communities like The Forest, Merriewood Drive, Keller Way Court, and Clear Creek Drive have some of the most luxurious real estate in all of Texas. In 2005, Friendswood was listed in the Top 100 Places to Live by CNN/Money magazine.
