Kingwood is a small census-designated place in Texas. It is located just thirty miles from Houston. This part of Harris County is in The Woodlands-Houston area. Spread over just about 14,000 acres, Kingwood remains the biggest master-planned community within Harris County. Its population is a little over 61,000. Over time, Kingwood has built itself quite a reputation as a residential colony.
History
The original land that is Kingwood belonged initially to the Foster Lumber Company. At this point, this land was not used for residential purposes. However, in 1967, it was sold to King Ranch and Friendswood Development Community in a joint venture. The task for the two was to develop the land into a viable city, constructing houses, churches, schools, greenbelts, shopping malls, and other recreational facilities. Kingwood gets its name from these two companies.
It was opened up in 1971, and since then, the slogan for the community has been ‘the livable forest.’ Initially, the population was only in the thousands but with time and more development, it has grown exponentially.
What is The City Like?
Kingwood boasts of a large forest cover – there are about 500 acres in nature preserves. The city is covered in greenery and foliage. It has a ‘village’ concept which is an area-wise division into localities. Most of these have facilities like schools, churches, and public pools. Many Kingwood schools are top-ranked in Texas. The Lone Star Community College is also located here.
Kingwood enjoys a subtropical climate. The winters are mild and summers are hot. Barrington Kingwood, Oakhurst, Royal Book, and Kings Mill are the posh locales in the area.

On Easter, the city holds an Easter Egg Hunt. There are also community festivals held during Christmas and the Fourth of July. This has led to the formation of a close-knit community in the area.
