The Memorial area in Houston is a very important and well-rounded neighborhood in the city. Undoubtedly, it is one of the best places to live in Texas. It is located west of downtown Houston and is surrounded by Buffalo Bayou, Katy Freeway, the Galleria Area, and the Barker Reservoir on other sides.

A Brief History

Memorial gets its name from Memorial Drive, which is an arterial road in Houston. It was named so to commemorate the memory of the soldiers of Camp Logan during World War 1.

Before the annexation of Memorial by Houston, it was largely a country area with farms and ranches. The rapid development of Houston as an urban, metropolitan area resulted in Memorial becoming an important residential area, owing to its proximity to the city. As it grew exponentially over the years, retail and commercial development also occurred. Several malls, shopping areas, restaurants, and clubs opened up. Today, Memorial offers the pleasures of city life while situated in a suburban utopia.

Mapping the Town

The Memorial area is quite popular, owing to its great location, negligible distance from Houston, and road connectivity. The area itself is divided into several neighborhoods. The Energy Corridor mainly comprises of the commercial, business-related activities that take place in town. Many companies have their offices there, and it has developed as a bustling corporate space. It runs parallel to Interstate 10 right in the middle of Kirkwood Road and Highway 6. As of 2017, more than 90,000 people are employed here.
