It has also seen a huge increase in creating job opportunities and has grown as a residential area.
A Long History
Sugar Land was originally inhabited by Atakapa. It was later developed and established by Samuel M. Williams, who got the land under the Stephen F. Austin grants. He originally called the area ‘Oakwood Plantation’ since there were many oak trees in the area. He and his brother established corn and sugarcane plantations all over the land. Oakwood Plantation was later renamed Sugar Land by Benjamin Terry.
As sugar mills began to be set up in the county, it became an attractive destination for those looking for work and many people began to settle down here. In 1908, the Imperial Sugar Company was set up that built raw sugar mills and cane sugar refineries. The city’s logo still carries the logo of the company.
Since the 21st Century, Sugar Land has been built as a master-planned community, home to families who revel in its luxurious lifestyle while enjoying the suburban Texan feel it provides to its residents.
